The Conservative Case Against Arizona's Immigration Law

Conservative commentators, such as Bill Kristol and George Will, have generally rushed to the defense of Arizona's harsh new law to make local law-enforcement officers act as de facto border patrol. But Matt Lewis, a staunchly conservative but independent-minded and intellectually honest columnist at the Daily Caller, dares to dissent from the party line. Lewis supports stricter border control and does not worry about the illegal immigrants being subjected to requests for their documents since they are by definition breaking the law. But he does think that conservatives who claim to fear the expansion of government power ought not to cheer a law that allows, much less encourages, cops to harass law-abiding U.S. citizens who happen to be Hispanic.
This law will lead to having the police harassing American citizens all over the country. Every 'security" agency lusts for the ability to walk up to anyone anywhere and asking, "Papers, please".
This law is not only unecessary it is the first big step to a totalitarian country.

As a conservative I am very concerned about this law's encroachment into the area of illegal search.
I don’t have any issue with a state taking things into their own hands when we see the federal government abdicating their responsibility. But if this law really does allow police to ask for ID without any evidence of a crime being committed, then it needs to be rewritten.
However, if the law simply allows police to pursue investigating a person’s status once they have been stopped for some real offense then I have no problem with it at all.

This isnt the first step... it may (or may not) another step and i think we should all be concerned.... but the Supreme Court has allowed DUI traps that stop all cars and give a sobriety test.
So we are already headed down that road.... I do agree that we should not be happy about it.

Real police are not Border Patrol. Entirely different groups with different missions, different training, different agendas. Kind of like the other brain child of rocket scientists that want to put the Army on the Border.
Not everybody wearing a uniform is the same.
And the OP point is well taken. I for one see the clear irony (and dare I say hypocrisy ) of the same posters who repeatedly squawk "Waco and Ruby Ridge" outrage and long live the FREE MILITIAs now suddenly taking the side of Law Enforcement as just doing their jobs and nobody has to worry about a thing. Nothing to see here , move along.
