My kids and I seen on t.v. where there are fish that fly up out of the water and it is supposed to be in the IL river close by Bath, IL. Does anyone know where this place is and can give directions to the part of river where this happens. My kids would like to see the fish come up out of the water. We are about 2 hrs away from Bath so I don't want to be driving all over trying to find it.

Default Bath, IL

Bath has a free fish fry every year, and for the past few years they have had a Redneck Fishing Tourn. It is usually the end of July or first part of Aug. It is located at the Boat tavern. It is for the whole family just sponsored by the tavern. Bath is located about 8 miles south of Havana on IL route 78. You won't miss the action. It is a fun time.

For some reason I think that is on the Hennipin Canal. It seems to me a friend of mine that has an inlaw with DNR took them to the southern part of the canal and this happened. I could be mistaken but I think it's the Hennipin Canal.

That phenomenon isn't just in Bath, it's all up and down the Illinois River unfortunately.

The fish are called Asian Carp, they're an invasive species that has taken over the river and are pushing out other fish species. Asian Carp respond to the noise made from boat motors, they will jump 3 or 4 feet out of the water. People have been injured by the flying carp.

More enterprising folks have turned to commercial fishing:

Bath itself is home to the "Redneck Fishing Tourney." This is probably what you saw referenced:

Carp in action:

I'll conclude by saying, while the "jumping fish" may be amusing, most everyone agrees that their emergence is an ecological tragedy that will probably lead to the elimination of many fish species from the midwest's river systems.

There is a guy in Bartonville Il that will take you out on his boat to go Bow Fishing. Its like hunting deer with a bow but in stead its flying fish.
