Hey everyone. I'm looking for information on living in the southern Indiana area. I'm relocating for a job from the suburbs of Chicago so this is going to be a big change for me!

I'm thinking of living in Versailles, Aurora, Lawrenceburg or Madison. Does anyone have any thoughts on apartments/houses for rent in the $600 range that allow pets? Or any other general information about the area? Anything I should know or avoid!

I'm really anxious about this move so any tips and tricks would be very helpful.

Thanks!

Default Madison

The only city I can speak for is Madison; I haven't been to or heard much about the others. Are you planning frequent trips into Cincinnati? I only ask because though it looks close enough, it's still a bit of a drive to Cincinnati or Louisville.

This weekend is the Madison Regatta. I'm sure you've already heard about it in your research. It's every July 4th weekend and draws thousands of visitors.

Madison is directly on the Ohio River. The riverfront has a nice walkway. Downtown is not far from the river. A new bridge between Indiana and Kentucky was installed recently. Downtown Madison is one of those historic downtowns with preserved buildings and lots of antique and/or gift stores, plus several restaurants. It's trying to improve to attract more tourists. It's a popular suggestion for local tourism in the Louisville area. Have you been to the old square in Crown Point? Downtown Madison is basically that, but larger.

That's about all I know. Madison is a nice place. And this:

Rent looks inexpensive, typical of rural Indiana.

I am not sure which city your new job is in, but from your list, I would suggest you look into Lawrenceburg/Aurora area (the two kinda blend into each other) or Madison as indicated above.

I have family that lives in Versailles, and my father worked in Versailles so I've been going there my whole life and am more knowledgeable about that town. It is a tiny city with not much to offer - you have to drive to Lawrenceburg, Madison, or other larger towns to get groceries. They have a dollar general store, and small places like that. No Walmart/Kmart/big box type store. The one grocery store charges twice what you would pay at Kroger for something. Just a handful of small local eateries, one McDonald's for fast food. Heck, the CVS store isn't even open 24 hours But, on the other hand, rent is cheap in the area.
So when you want to go see a movie and grab a bite to eat, you will be driving to Lawrenceburg, or to Madison, or other locations in the area.

If your new job happens to be IN Versailles, you might also look at Batesville or Greensburg for a place to live. Greenburg is the bigger of the two and has the big box stores, plus several apartment options. it is also located about halfway between Indy and Cincinnati so finding something to do on the weekends isn't too difficult. Batesville is closer to Cincinnati and is a nice little burg with a few apartment choices and nice eateries.

As for Lawrenceburg and Aurora, I do not know much about them, other than when I am visiting family in Versailles, we typically drive to Lawrenceburg to go eat, go to Walmart if needed, etc. You are not far from Cincinnati, and can easily access larger shopping and entertainment opportunities. And like Madison, they are located directly on the Ohio River.

Best of luck to you as you make your decision!

If you like being in the suburbs I'd say aurora or lawrenceburg would be your best options due to being close to all Cincy will offer. Madison is nice though and has a variety if small local restaurants and shops as well as some good outdoor activities with he riverfront and Clifty Falls state park right there. It's also only an hour from Louisville or 1.5 hours to Cincy which isn't bad if you want to go do something, but would rather live in a smaller town.

I have nothing personal against Versailles, but it would be my last choice on your list. As someone else said there isn't much there and there's a bit of a drug problem in that general area, although it isn't as bad as around Austin.
