Hubby and I are considering going to the job fair at Indy Live in the new year. We had initally looked at going ahead with our plan to live in columbus {and may yet, he has some other offers out of state that we're looking at} but the almost-hour commute and the fact that it's either I 65 S or backroads with hairy turns to the casino and back.

So I've been looking at greatschools.net and various other sites, and it seems that the fairland schools are the best in the immediate vicinity for special needs etc, and a super-short drive from the 'town' of fairland to the casino. Due to the size though, I'm concerned about rental availability, especially homes w/ 3 bds and 1.5 baths or more. So I'm wondering what other options are viable as far as close proximity to the casino, with good schools and home rental availablity?

Is Indiana Live the one in Shelbyville? Have you thought about New Palestine? I know their school system is small and very good ... not sure if it meets your special needs, needs.

Hadn't considered that one. We just got back from a night at the casino {don't ask, it wasn't our usual double our money trip } We talked about it and we both still want Columbus if we do settle in Indiana, everything there fits except our concerns about the job market if cummins has to continue with layoffs or move them to the blue collar side, since cummins is such a major employer/the major employer in columbus.

Most companies are laying off ... heck, even the Honda Plant in Greensburg is lowering production, no layoffs ... yet.

I hope you come to Columbus! That house I told you about is still for rent!!!

thank you. Looks like we might be headed to Greenville, SC though, at least for the short term. Hubby found an accelerated program where he can get his bachelors degree in 2.5 years, and the cost of living allowance provided by the new GI bill would cover rent AND utilities. So he's leaning rather heavily that direction. I don't think the heat and humidity will be something he wants to live with long-term though, so if we do go that route we'll probably be back in no time once his degree is finished.

I surely will. I doubt we can stay away from Indiana for long stretches anyways. Still have aging family members here. I am a bit worried about the distance, but most of the people we are concerned about are the ones telling us we'll regret it more if we loose this opportunity to make our lives and our childrens lives better than if we're 5 or 10 minutes late to a funeral. {we have some chipper yet morbid people in our families}
