We are looking for someone to build a deck in zionsville. also does anyone have a composite deck? how do you like it? we want a 10x20 deck and got an estimate for composite that was $7000. we are trying to beat that price but also considering wood.

I have built many decks. Ground level, two story and three story decks. Wood decks are OK, but they have a certain life expectancy. What ever they tell you, they will rot if not properly maintained and sealed.

Composit materials look very nice when properly constructed and will last a long time. The price you mentioned sounds about right. Price will vary depending on how many sets of steps, any fancy details you want, railings, etc.

The key to building a good deck is it's base. It must be supported on solid piers and underpinnings of sufficient size and strength. You certainly don't want the deck to be springy or feel unsteady underfoot.

If your contractor has good references and can show you samples of his work you should be fine. Just be sure you and he are on the same page about design, materials, and completion time.
Good luck.

Default Thanks

Thanks traderjack (are u Joe's brother). the builder offered a pressure treated deck of the same size for $2000. we our first time buyers and thought we could beat that price but haven't been able to. we thought composite would be a great in the long term but were expecting a price closer to $5000. please PM if you have a recommended contractor.
