On a tangent, mainly 'cause I'm finished with this Never Ending Story.
Someone in the Automotive Forum started a thread about leaving his truck unlocked with the keys in it while at a car dealer parking lot. He got royally ticked because one of the kids that worked there hopped in and moved it.
The main reason he was pissed? His gun was in the glove compartment.
You might look into your local library. My local system has wifi at all branches. And at some places the signal's strong enough to pick up out in the parking lot. With the rising cost of home internet I've been seriously considering canceling and just going with wifi.
Does anyone have info/advice on security from using public wifi?

Since it's public access there is none....
Texas has free WiFi at their highway rest stops...
I wonder how many of these low quality people that abuse hotspot services are out there.
One of the advantages of living in central NJ is that we have 80% coverage of WiFi by the cable providers. As long as you're a customer of Comcast, Time Warner, or Optimum Online you have access to WiFi just about everywhere.
Verizon & ATT have teamed up to compete but their coverage is only available in public areas (malls, parks, restaurants, etc) so far.
