Saw this plop itself into my tray this afternoon and went looking.

Found an explanation for those of you who discovered it 'cluttering' their desktop icon tray too!

Quote:
All around the world, Windows users are discovering a new icon in their notification trays—an offer to reserve a free copy of Windows 10. Sounds too good to be true, yes? Except Windows 10 actually is a free upgrade, and this really does appear to be the way you’ll get it.

Click on that icon, and up pops a description of how the upgrade process will work. (Were you hoping you’d get to download Windows 10 today? Sorry, this is just the reservation process.) Give Microsoft your email address—or not—and then Windows 10 will automatically download to your computer once Microsoft pulls the trigger.

When will that be? July is a pretty good bet. If you want Windows 10 on a disc, you can probably expect that to arrive at the end of August.
Why Yes, That Creepy Icon Is Your Free Copy of Windows 10

Win 10 will be available July 29 The icon will be next to the date/time for 1 year, 2 months if you don't download. I've been informed that it is 20 gigs. My isp is only 8mps. I think I'll need a disc.

No concrete proof but I'm going to guess "NO CHANCE'. If there was a disc option they would at least charge you $9.99.

I have multiple computers, do have to download Windows 10 on each computer?

You can download a .ISO file and upgrade each computer offline. The ISO should be available by the time Windows 10 launches.

Windows 10 will be offered two ways to existing Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 users. You will be able to download the update through Windows Update or you can download .ISO media and use it do an in place upgrade.
