I can see how this could be. plenty of things that I no longer bother to commit to memory now that I can google them.

Quick: What’s your aunt’s cellphone number? Or your best friend’s from college?
Better yet, tell us what you did on Monday? You may have a tough time remembering because the Internet is wrecking your memory. That’s according to a new study from Kaspersky Lab, which finds Americans can’t commit data to memory because the answers are just a click away.
I never remember phone numbers anymore since we all moved away from using landlines about a decade ago or so. This does not bode well if you lose your phone and you have to make emergency calls ...
I intentionally stopped remembering phone numbers back in the early 1990s. It made sense to remember them when landlines were kept for generations, but it makes no sense to bother remembering "What’s your aunt’s cellphone number? Or your best friend’s from college?" I've got better things to remember.

true, but it's a good idea to have at least a couple of them memorized. it's embarrassing when I can't remember my wife's number when filling out some form or other.
Phone numbers are a bad example. When you physically physically punch in the number every single time you call someone, you will eventually remember the number.
With cell phones you just type on the persons name in your contacts. Of course people wont bother trying to remember a string of 10 digits for no real reason.
The only phone numbers I have memorized are mine, my wife's, and 911.
Everyone else's I can look up.
I have 911 written down in case I ever need it.....
