with the recent sale of the building I live in, I have lost the in-house wifi. For my laptop, I bought a wifi antenna that picks up open public networks nearby, but my Kindle, while it "sees" the networks, can not connect. Is there such a thing as a wifi antenna for a Kindle, or is there something I could plug into the larger antenna to create my own mini network?

Of course that requires the laptop be on. You can then connect the device to the laptop.
I have no experience with these but you can Google Google wifi repeater, I believe some routers also have this functionality. You set the router up to connect to the public wifi and then you connect the device to your router.
What you want is essentially a wireless travel hotspot - it takes one public IP and then shares it on another WiFi network. I’ve used these types of devices when traveling to hotels that only give you access to one wireless device at a time.
Due to its size it doesn’t have great range, which may or may not be an issue for you. Larger routers should also have similar functionality.

OMG it worked for my Kindle at least!! Going to see if my neighbor can use it as well. I wonder how far it goes.
ETA - it works for her (next apartment) but not well enough for her to watch Netflix. Works for my Kindle everywhere in my apt.
Easiest way to find out is put it to sleep but I'm about 99.9999% sure that will not work. If you are looking for long term solution look into the other options.
