It seems as though anytime I try to access a website from a shortcut on my desktop I consistently am unable to do so and get that horribly annoying message "not responding." Can anyone suggest a reason or a fix to stop that from happening?

If this just started happening try a system restore to a date before the problem started, also do a virus scan, you may have bugs.

Is it happening only when you use that shortcut? Does it work if you just type in the URL?

Unplug your modem from the router for a few minutes, plug it back in, and see if it works.

Questions:

What is the exact text of the message?

What browser do you usually use? Does the same one open when you use one of these shortcuts?

Is your connectivity otherwise fine (e.g. you can visit other sites, just not a session initiated from a shortcut on your desktop)?

What security software do you have installed? Does it employ any mechanisms that might cause this behavior?

Is the shortcut properly formatted (e.g. full URL, including "http://" not just "www.example.com")?

Is it Vista?

Man I had this at a client site a few months ago, but it was in the middle of about a gazillion things and I cannot remember what I did to fix it! I think it was some stupid setting in Vista or the Internet Explorer security settings. If it is IE then Vista isn't important.

Go into IE (assumption here) and reset all security settings to default. Or reset them one at a time and test the links to see if they work. That way you will know which one is the culprit in case it happens again.

If my brain lights up I'll let you know what I remember.

Did you try deleting the shortcut and re-creating it?
