The other thread on fee's got me thinking. And confused to be honest.
We have a total of 51 funds. Many with the high costs. If you had 25 years of investing left and could stomach the ups ad downs what would you pick?

Thanks.

All super high fees. Instead invest in index funds like SPY and BND. Expense ratios of .05% to .07%

Please don't exaggerate. The fees are not "super high". The fees are all below average for their respective categories. Yes, it would be better if they were lower, but I've seen much worse in terms of fees.

If you invest in an IRA, you can only put in up to $5500, and some people are disqualified from a Trad. IRA if their incomes are too high.

Plus, the OP may also have a match. It's almost always worth it to at least contribute up to the matching amount.

Rocafeller, I highly recommend Janus Balanced. It's a solid performing balanced fund that owns a mix of stocks and bonds. The .67% expense ratio is well below the median of .80% for "institutional" share classes of balanced funds. Typically, "institutional" share classes are cheaper than what you could buy own your own outside your 401k plan. The .67% expense ratio isn't a screaming bargain, but it is reasonable.

You could make Janus Balanced your only fund and consider it a reasonably diversified portfolio, all by itself.

If you want to be adventurous, you could at TRP Health Sciences. This fund has awesome returns, but it can be volatile. And we don't know if it will have awesome returns in the future. So I'd keep my stake at maybe 5%. The Victory Small Cap fund would also be a nice addition.

So for a super simple portfolio just do this:

Janus Balanced 100%

For a slightly more complicated portfolio, do this:
Janus Balanced: 90%
T. Rowe Price Health Sciences: 5%
Victory Small Company Opportunities: 5%.

Neither option is perfectly diversified, but both are good enough. The perfect is the enemy of the good in this instance.

The most important thing you can do is save a non-trivial amount in your portfolio, and do it year in and year out. Aim for at least 15%. That is what it realistically takes to have a decent retirement in your 60s if you start young.

Are you limited in your choices because they are inside something like a 401K plan, for example?

If not, simplify life and go with VWELX or one of the Vanguard target retirement funds (or a judicious mixture of VTI/SCHB/ITOT + BND/SCHZ/AGG + a soupcon of foreign/real estate/commodities.)

If yes, then go with FFTHX. Just one fund is enough - it will adjust the stock/bond mix automatically based on your age.

if it were my choices i would go with janus balanced . i would avoid anything that blindly tries to invest for one size fits all by age and changes allocations on me based on nothing but age .

Yes these are the choices within the 401 plan at the workplace. I'm maxing it out.

The thing is I have a chunk of change in about 15 different funds from over the years.

Should I just leave them be and just start funding these other ones? Or sell and grab these other funds?

Thanks so far!

I like this option. And I agree that the Janus Balanced fund is the best single choice of the various funds offered in your company's plan. You don't have the absolute best 401k choices, but you do have a pretty decent plan overall, far better than what many people are stuck with. So I'd at least fund your 401k to the level of your company match (and higher if you can, unless you want to stick $5500/year into index funds inside an IRA first).

One of the things you should consider with the mutual funds is making sure manager investment is beyond $1 mill. Its not talked about very much, but statistically when a manager has over $1,000,000 of their own money in the fund, the fund is more likely to beat the market. Its easy to find out. 15 funds is typically way too many. You probably have a lot of overlap in the holdings of those 15 funds.

Like Mathjak and I said, Janus Balanced would be a good fund that does almost all of what you need.

If all of 15 are inside retirement accounts, I recommend selling and just getting Janus Balanced. It doesn't sound like you know much about investing, so don't make it more complicated than it needs to be.

Yeah without a doubt there is overlap. And I'm the first to admit I'm a newb at investing. Just been getting into it the last 6 months. Most of the funds were accumulated over a 16 year period.

I'm kinda suprised most are saying go all in with Janus with it being a 64/33 fund. I thought with 25 years out I would need to be more aggressive? What am I missing?
