dividends usually track where interest rates go.the dividends on the s&p 500 have been historically low. when rates rise dividends generally follow . they rise when rates rise either because dividends have been increased or share price has fallen giving new investors a higher yield..

I've been doing some reading:

The Single Best Investment: Creating Wealth with Dividend Growth

and

The Little Book of Value Investing.

I'm not expert by any means but the first thing I asked myself was what I was investing for. My answer was retirement. I haven't bought much stock but I've bought in companies that pay a dividend such as BAC, TGT, BP, PM and a couple others. My strategy is to reinvest dividends and let the power of compounding work for me over the next 25+ years.

If I were to watch the daily fluctuations and sell in a panic, I'd just go insane.

I've been buying TGT lately as it has taken a big hit.

Ones I'm looking for in the near future to buy are: COST, XOM, PG and WMT. No, they're not glorious but they're probably steady enough for me so I don't have to work until I'm 75.
