I also don't look at my car as an investment. its a tool that I use to get places. the fact that its worth anything when I am done with it is a nice bonus.
In terms of beauty and jewelry, who really likes a diamond? It is just a shiny bobble and cannot compare with a piece of jewelry made by an artist. We are just a bunch of sheep who follow the rules we were taught. Oops, I forgot. I did not buy my wife a diamond ring. She is an artist and also agreed that a diamond is not important. She really likes ear rings and bracelets I gave her. They were made by skilled Hopi and Zuni silversmiths.
I consider the engagement ring I bought my Fiance a wedding expense. It falls under the same categories as paying the venue, photographer, DJ, etc. I plan on getting no monetary back out of it. I only plan to get happiness, because like every married says... a happy wife, a happy life.
Also, try to tell any jeweler that sells diamonds that they aren't a good investment. With their price going up all the time and pretty much never going down, it seems to work well for them!
No one even buys a wedding ring as an investment;its not even comparable. That doesn't make them "suckers" that makes them American. Actually most cultures have a marital gift exchange of some kind. Find me a lady who truly doesn't want a wedding ring and is willing to discuss not getting one (believe me, I've tried). I know they're out there but I can show you their other faults, even if expecting a reasonable ring isn't one of them.. Certain things are just givens based on our cultural context.
Luckily my wife thinks diamonds are stupid. Unsure of what to buy I just left it up to her. She bought nice 1/2 carat diamond ring and the rest she loaded up on .916 solid gold bracelets and necklaces. 10k bought a lot of it back in 2000 which has turned into a very good investment. She much prefers plain gold jewelry (as long as its 22kt aka .916 solid or bettter) over any rock.
She has much more than that now so for holidays when she straps on 60k worth of gold it puts most any diamond ring to shame.
Investment? Every woman in American owns at least 3 diamonds. Baby mamas in the ghetto own a diamond or two. Diamonds are not exactly rare.
You can buy calender art that is much more limited in edition than a diamond, and calenders are thrown in the trash at the end of the year.
The diamond engagement ring might be necessary and if it is important to your future wife, then it might be a good purchase, but don't think it is an investment of a monetary type,
Sorry, not way you are going to get 50% of the purchase price if you have to sell it.
If more people thought about where those diamonds come from, they'd be a lot less likely to spend money on them.
Why? You have something against Canada and her diamond mines?
