In Des Moines, there are several days around Dec. 21 where the sun sets at 4:46 pm. Otherwise, it is later.

I'm frequently driving and have noted the times.

The further east you get, the earlier the sun sets. I grew up in western Iowa and remember sunset was no earlier than 4:50 in the winter. Now that I am in the eastern part of the state is gets noticeably darker earlier in the day (sunset usually around 4:30 for the darkest couple of weeks during the winter). Go even further east toward Chicago and sunset is closer to 4:20.
