how does wrestling rank in popularity compared to the big four or five (if you add soccer)

I would say it goes something like this:

1. Football
2. Basketball
3. Wrestling
4. Basball

Although, I would say wrestling and baseball are very close in popularity.

Remember this rating is based on the area where I live.

if it varies by area, then would you say it is more popular in the very rural farming areas than in the small city areas ?

I grew up in a town of 5,000 in western Iowa. Sure, some people were involved in wrestling in school but I wouldn't say it was nearly as popular as football or basketball was. I don't think I've ever seen or heard of anyone holding backyard wrestling matches. If they are interested in wrestling, more than likely practice happens at a school gym, or as someone above said, in a structured tournament geared toward different age ranges. I think the popularity has more to do with the comment about "school spirit"...i.e., if your school is competitive in wrestling then there is usually a good turnout of spectators. But, I really didn't know that many classmates who wrestled, even just for recreation.
