Thanks, John, for notifying us of this juicy current event. What a revolting development this must have been. Was the driver charged with anything?

Ive heard of that happening even with dump trucks, some drivers forget about the powerline above while they are doing a spread. Common sense tells you, no matter where you are raising your bed, get out and physically look around. Dont rely on some landscaper who wouldnt know the difference between a bottle of Bud Lite and a daisy.

In the show The Smoking Gun, World's Dumbest Drivers, they showed a gal driving an 18-wheeler, who was stopped on top of the railroad tracks, and a train was coming. If I remember correctly, that was in San Bernardino, California, and you might have heard about it, or seen it. The lights were flashing and the bar came down to stop traffic, but unfortunately the truck driver was stopped on the tracks. She tried to clear the tracks, but the Amtrak train that was going about 80 MPH plowed into the trailer, and it got pulverized! Thankfully, the cab cleared the tracks and the woman driver was okay.

The driver was obviously seriously distracted from his driving.

Not necessarily. The boom-arm is typically mounted on the nose of the trailer and, hence, invisible in the mirrors.

Pulling down powerlines isn't all that an uncommon experience with big trucks. It's easier to do than you think. If you think not, take a 13'6" trailer down an alley-way or through some neighborhood and see for yourself. You really have to do some serious bending and stretching to see the nose of the trailer in the mirror, which is where powerlines snag.
