Actually it is. In Texas simple assault is exactly that.
Assault by provocative or offensive contact refers to an act that does not cause physical injury or pain but is upsetting or causes the victim to feel violated. Simple Assault in Texas | Criminal Law
Nothing this guy did constituted even that type of assault. He neither touched them in any way or entered their personal space (ie got in their face).
And even if you want to argue its not for religious reasons - even when those who practice said religion SAY and BELIEVE it is - it still doesn't afford anyone else the right to tell others to leave.
The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States affords them the right to tell others to leave. They can't force them to leave, but they can certainly tell them to.

Yea - that part is covered by "freedom of speech"
Freedom of speech always involves things the person hearing it doesn't want to hear. If you only say inoffensive things that are ok by everyone - then you don't of freedom of speech. You have limited speech - which already exists in every country.
Jumping to conclusions about someone's ideology because they chose to advertise it - well that's tricky.
However, your ideology - whether its Islam, veganism, animal rights, socialism, gun rights - doesn't get a pass on examination just because you put the word "religion' on it. Its still an ideology - and it is subject to scrutiny.
Oh poor babies. Welcome to the real world, yeah people can be cruel. Suck it up and move on. Oh wait, we have to go to the media and get our 15 seconds of "outrage".
And the Muslim woman in Canada who was beat to a pulp in front of her son and told to "go back home"? Should she just suck it up and move on?
I understand a lot of people are ****ed off as they should be about what happened in SB and Paris and are on edge, but taking it out on American citizens isn't going to improve anything, and plays into the hands of the real bad guys.

Not going to fly - States would be very wary of prosecuting someone for what they say or think - with very few exceptions. Hence we have to listen to the Westboro homophobic church at veteran's funerals.

Hurtful words are not comparative to physical assault. If this is the basis for your argument, you are clearly in over your head among people who can interpret events and subsequent response in a more accurate and articulate fashion.
It is not about 15 min fame or getting on news. Its about awareness. If this loud mouth jerk said rude things to this girl without anyone questioning him, next time he will do the same to someone else & then someone else. Soon he will feel so good about yelling/telling off young Muslim's that one day his desire/hate could escalate to physically attacking them (like that guy that shoot 3 Muslim student in NCS). Or the reverse he could be bullying this young girl every time she walks on campus that she seeks revenge.

Damn if that's all it is I was assaulted a ton as a kid because I was called fat, a loser, etc. more than a few times.

No - there is a clear distinction between freedom of thought and speech - and actions. There is not freedom of actions when they violate someone else's rights. But you can basically say and think what you want.
You can believe that people who are apostates from Islam, or who refuse to recognize Allah, should be killed. But you can't go and kill them.
Speech and thought - freedom
Actions - limited.
