Are we done talking about dreaming? Maybe Jackson should dream for whites to come back?

In all seriousness, it wasn't white flight. It was upper and upper middle class working families that abandoned Jackson. They left because of a thing called "quality of life". People who work hard (black and white) value low taxes, clean neighborhoods, respectful neighbors and people who value families and safety. Once Jackson starts working on those issues then people will come back.

White flight is mostly white and that's where it got its name... But it doesn't refer to only white people. The reason for the move was to get into less racially diverse neighborhoods.

Quality of life is all relative. Many people are now preferring walkable urban centers to suburbs that weren't as well planned as their counterparts. They sort of popped over night without the detail that many older cities have. Jackson isn't really a walkable city but it has good bones and can get there.

You're right. You got us. White people left cause we're racists. And cities biggest hindrance is lack of dreaming.

No point in even trying to talk about this with you.

What????? What are you talking about? I didn't say anything like that. Read the post again. How did you get that from what I posted? White people left because you're racist?

I don't see anything wrong with having big dreams for Jackson. Do I think that most will be realized in my lifetime? No, but maybe our big dreaming can make some of it happen for future generations.

I know Madison doesn't want us to, but Jackson has to look at other cities as inspiration for turning things around. For many years, Atlanta and Washington were cities that were on the decline. Now, they've been redeveloping and also reversed population declines and are in the way up again. How Jackson rebounds may not go the same way those two cities have done it. It won't even do it the way Birmingham is doing it. Each city will have its own unique way of doing it.

I look at developments like the District at Eastover and the Meridian at Fondren as linchpins for Jackson's rebound. No, they're not going to get things turned around by themselves, but it will help contribute to shoring up our tax base to do the things that desperately need to get done, like combating crime, fixing our crumbling infrastructure and provide more resources for Jackson Public Schools.

Madison doesn't want Jackson to improve for their own economic gain. But the same thing could be said about all of the other communities outside of Jackson.

DING!!!! The various communities around Jackson owe their existence to Jackson. Without Jackson, they'd be just dots on a map. I get that people in Jackson won't stop going to Ridgeland and Flowood to shop, but the more shops and restaurants come to Jackson, the less money leaving out. In fact, let's see how many Madison and Rankin Countians will be at the D@E when it opens.

But hey, go ahead and dream, elect previous mayors who wanted to teach public school kids that African sailors discovered America, and elect race baiting idiots like Stokes to important positions.
Well that shows how little you know about Jackson politics! Mayor Yarber hasn't attempted to eliminate Christopher Columbus from history books, & he won't! Mayor Lumumba was ignorant, and not good at all for this city. And about, Stokes, Stokes was elected by the people, the community, of Ward 3! Ward 3 is west Jackson, centered around the Medical Mall, Hawkins Field, & Medgar Evers Blvd. At first we all couldn't believe those people over there actually reelected this clown when there were clearly other awesome candidates that were willing to do a better job than Stokes!

Recently though, Stokes has said some things to maybe invoke the thought that Stokes isn't entirely TOO idiotic. Stokes has got some big plans for his ward concerning crime, and that's a good start in a ward of the city that is so steeped in poverty.
