Hi everyone!
This is my first post but I've been a long time reader! My family is planning a move to Jacksonville over the summer (hopefully). We'd like to move near or in the Mandarin neighborhood. We prefer a little bit of yuppie-ness if you know what I mean. We are looking for a place where our four year old can safely ride his bike, there are a lot of kids but not so many that there is trouble in the neighborhood. We're pretty open location wise because I work from home so no commute but the school we plan on sending our son to is near Mandarin so we'd prefer to stay in that area. We'd like to keep the budget around $800 a month for an apartment but are flexible, especially if it means a better living environment. What are your thoughts? What the best place for us snooty Chicagoians to move in Jacksonville without spending TOO much?

I REALLY appreciate your help! I'm looking for both neighborhood suggestions as well as actual apartment/townhouse complex suggestions if you have them.

Thanks a ton!
~Shari

Yuppieness? Hmmmm ... just about anywhere in Mandarin I guess. $800 might be a factor though so I'd say right off of SR 13 within 2 miles of I-295 North or South. Just guessing though not sure what rents are over there anymore. Maybe off Sunbeam Rd?

Yuppies in Mandarin?? I'd think Southside, Riverside, Springfield, maybe parts of the Beaches. Mandarin's not really that young...I'd try to find something close to San Marco if you're snooty But there aren't really any good apts up there and you're hard pressed to find anything for $800/month.

Also I need some clarification: do you want a neighborhood or an apt?

I'm looking for both apartments and neighborhoods. I'm just not sure I'm sold on Mandarin so I'm wondering if there is something cute nearby (within 10-15 min drive) that I should also consider or is Mandarin a great place and I should just stick with it? We are young (under 28) so we don't want to stumble into a retirement neighborhood either.
Thanks for your help!

Julington creek plantation area is a nice area just south of Mandarin.
