Hello! I'll be moving to Jacksonville in July to attend law school (yes, I've heard all the horror stories about FCSL) and was wondering if anyone has any advice for assimulating with the locals, lol. I'm from Minnesota originally and it took me about a year and a half to assimilate to the east coast climate in Maryland (trust me when I tell you that people in the midwest think COMPLETELY differently than those on the east coast) and I'm hoping it'll be easier to assimilate to a southern climate than it was northeastern.

Also, I'm looking for good schools as I have a 6 year old son who is way too bright for his own good and I'd like to ensure he's getting an amazing education.

Any help would be great!

You'll have your hands full with law school and a 6 year old. When I was in law school - we had "study groups". Four or five students who'd meet on a regular basis to go over the material - and help each other to maximize their chances of success. If you've seen the movie The Paper Chase - it has a study group (although I never heard of one that was as dysfunctional as the one in the movie). A study group might be a good first step in terms of meeting people here.

Concerning your school question - where will you be living? Robyn

It all depends, but most likely with relatives or my parents for at least my first year of law school (since you can't work the first year unless you go in to a 4 year program and I'm not willing to do that).

My parents want to actually live closer to the Space Coast, and if that's the case they'd have my son M-F down there with me coming home on the weekends (I'm not exactly ok with this, but if it's in the best interest for him I'd consent). I'd end up staying with my uncle who lives on the West side of Jacksonville.

I know a little about the schools here (just from what I read) - but nothing about the west side or the Space Coast. I would suspect that the Space Coast is kind of really depressed economically as a result of what's going on with NASA.

Based on what you say - your parents will be moving here too. Yes? What are they looking for in a place?

And perhaps other people here can give you some info about the schools on the west side (are you talking about Duval County or Clay County?). Robyn

Where on the west side of Jacksonville are you talking? As where ever you live determines what elementary school your son will attend. And FWIW the westside of Jacksonville is a huge area, though rural it is bigger in itself than mostl midwestern cities.
