Hi,

I'm looking at possibly relocating from Seattle to Jacksonville and a friend here offered me his house in Arlington. It is on Galveston Ave, can someone tell me what this neighborhood is like? It's an adult household, with a college student so school district isn't that important. I am looking at a job downtown and wondering about the commute as well.

Thanks in advance

You should tell your friend thanks but NO thanks as Galveston Ave, is in the middle of an area known locally as Sin City. A poorer, low class, poorly maintained area of Jacksonville where cheap shotgun shacks are interspersed with tawdry mobile homes and a rather large, low rent assisted apartment complex. The only good point to the area is it's close proximity to the downtown area, but you would be better served by looking in the Riverside or San Marco area as they are even closer, safer and in general better neighborhoods.

Hmm, thanks for the reply. I'm looking at $600 for a 3 bed/ 2 bath 1940 sq ft house, can I find anything comparable to that in any of those neighborhoods? I didn't see any apartment buildings on Galveston Ave on Google Maps but the last time they were through there was April 2011. It actually looked a little rural compared to my suburban neighborhood outside of Seattle, not what I was expecting for "Sin City".

I agree with William, the area is pretty ugly. I just did a search of a 1 mile radius of the intersection of Acme and Galveston and came up with 143 crimes since Jan.1 - yeah, 32 days. Here's the source:

Not very user friendly but a good tool.
