Hi,

My family and I are thinking about moving to Jacksonville FL from Detroit, MI.

I've been there before on a trip and I loved it. I just need more information on the cost of living, great schools for kids in the 1st and 5th grade and great place to live housing. I also would like to know is this a good place for you to open up your own business.

Thank you
Mea

No simple answer to your questions, this is the right web-site though to find statistics. You might want to check out greatschools.com to find info on schools, but really, you need to determine where your business is going to be, before you determine your school. As far as your business, well, that's the 64,000 question. It's going to depend on what your business is, how you are going to market it, etc. etc., etc.
Good luck! Others will chime in behind me here.

Hi Mea,

Right here on the City-Data site you can find statistics about Jacksonville in general, and that might help to answer some of your questions:

(scroll down the page, it is long

Jacksonville, Florida (FL) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders

Also, I'm going to give you a link to the City-Data Terms of Service. There are some great tips there for how to compose your question so that you can get the best possible feedback:

Terms of Service - City-Data Forum

There are a lot of nice options for where to live in Jacksonville/Duval county and the surrounding counties, it's just going to depend on your personal criteria.....

Do you like urban, suburban or rural living? Do you want to live near the beach? The river? Downtown? Where do you think you'll be working (commute can be a BIG issue in a city as spread out as we are )? How about your housing budget - that can be a big determining factor is what areas we'd recommend for you.

You can get some great feedback from the folks here, we just need some more details in order to point you in the right direction .

A frank and generic response to anyone that asks if they'll like JAX (given that you're seriously considering it): book a 3 day vacation and see for yourself. Unless you're house hunting, 3 days is all you'll ever need to explore JAX to get a sense of the town, you might even have spare time to see St. Augustine.

Default Relocation to Jacksonville, FL

I would like to live in the Suburban or urban area in Jacksonville, FL and also I would like to know do Jacksonville get a lot of bad weather that destroy homes etc. like MIAMI and other parts of Florida. I do love the beach areas but if that is not a go area to move far as the Hurricane season . I can move somewhere else. The business I have here in Detroit,MI is a Soul food restaurant. I would like to open up another one in Jacksonville,FL. I just need to know where can I get started with finding out about opening up a new business and the advantages and disadvantages with owing your own business. Me and my husband is self employed at this time, but are there good job opportunities there for the Medical field and Construction work.

Jacksonville has been lucky with its tropical weather and have missed the "Big One".

It is a very diverse city depending on what you like. From the beaches to farmland with horses, waterfront, to golf courses. It has a little of everything.
