I signed on to 'SpotCrime' to get a basic idea of crime in and around the Fruit Cove area. And used the St Johns Library (60 Davis Pond Blvd, St Johns, FL 32259) as a center point with a 15 mile radius. (Designated by the blue marker on the map). What I have found is little to no crime in Fruit Cove, Nocatee and certain other ares that would fall into the selected radius. However I've noticed a preponderance of crime in the Mandarin and to a somewhat lesser degree Orange Park and Fleming Isl areas.

Of course like most online sources I take this with a grain of salt which is why I'm asking here. Is this in fact an accurate representation of these areas ?

Thank you...

Not sure if this will show correctly but here is the link I received this morning. ( receive a daily report of crime activity every morning via email)

Where you YOU on 11/18? Hmmm???

Lots of "other"s on that list. Could be jaywalking or some speeding offense. I wouldn't look too deeply into a single day.

I subscribe to this report in my area as well. I would be curious if this includes only Duval county. If it includes JSO, SJSD, State etc, then it's no wonder why people are flooding from all over the country to live in St Johns.

A lot of the ''Other'' listings seem to ''Suspicious person'' a lot. And suspicious person could pretty much be anything. I walked late at night with my best friend once, we were just taking a walk at a really late hour while he was visiting. Might have been 2:00 AM or 3:00 AM or so. An officer rode past us and pulled over (didn't get out of the car though) and asked us a few questions. Said he had gotten a call about ''Suspicious activity'' in the area and we fit the description. Once he saw we were just walking, he took off and everything was okay. He spent maybe 60-90 seconds talking to us and went on about his night. My guess is that someone called the cops after seeing two guys walking in front of their house at some crazy hour of the night. Even though we weren't being loud, weren't being obnoxious, weren't drunk. Just were going for a leisurely walk and just talking with each other. I see a lot of those reports in my neighborhood and I'm sure it's the same things, with no real trouble being caused or any threat. I'm not saying I blame residents for calling either though.

I check out this site quite a bit and it's very useful, but I do notice that in the Jax area, they very liberally use report under ''Shooting''. There's a couple of reports of ''Shooting's'' in my neighborhood from just tonight. But when you click on it, it's just reports of ''Discharging of firearm''. I mean, I'm sure if there's a legit shooting, it would appear on there as well. But I see them use that quite frequently and I'm thinking there's a call to the police if someone hears a gunshot or hears what even sounds like one. There were a ton of them around the 4th of July and I'd bet a good deal of them were for fireworks, which can be mistaken for a gunshot from far away, or someone unfamiliar with the difference in sound between a firearm and fireworks.

I'm pretty sure it includes St Johns also. Now if you type in the address where my best friend lives in Delra Beach and you see shooting, they usually only post shooting reports when someone actually is shot. Not that many people are getting shot where he lives, just that they only put it when someone is legit shot or shot at. Not just from ''Discharging of firearm''. You also don't see all the ''Other'' reports there and ''Suspicious person'' sightings. My guess is because the police department doesn't track the ''Suspicious person'' calls in his town, even though I'm sure they happen. Now if you look up the town I grew up in back in Jersey, they don't list any crimes in any of those towns. It's not because there's no crime at all, it's just because the town's obviously don't report their crimes to the site. It varies from region to region.

I think those listings under ''Shooting'' in Jax are very deceiving if you don't follow this website closely.

Mandarin is a very safe place. There's probably the occasional car burglary or very rare home burglary.

Thanks for the replies guys. I really don't know what to make of this, clearly there is a preponderance of 'reported' assaults and theft (I listed the next few days reports).

Although I would rather rely on those who live there to assess the safety of an area, I would also want to look further. What other sources are there in Jax for this type of information ?

However that said, since I am looking in the Fruit Cove/St Johns area I'm glad to see it appears to be relatively safe. The contrast though is rather curious. it seems as though Julington Creek is a dividing line of sorts....

Thank you Eric.

The JSO seems to confirm what SpotCrime has shown. I'll take that into consideration when I look.
