If you do drive, make sure you leave early. I live in Hudson Valley and left for Florida at 3:00 am. Made it to Florence, SC ( This town was recommended on this very website for a stopover) in 12 hours, what according to google was a 10:15 drive was 12:00 ( factor in having two kids that needed to eat, bathroom breaks, gas, etc.) If you do drive, leave early.

Made most of the trip in the end of October. I live at the CT/NY border, and I left at 6:20 AM. Made it to Rock Hill,SC (south of Charlotte via 78,81,77 route) at 8:40 PM. It was just mend it was a long day. Stopped for a late breakfast in Carlise,PA, gas in Woodstock VA and then a rest step near Roanoke. Did noIt stop for lunch since grabbed a protein bars at the gas station. No traffic other than an hour + backup in southwestern VA. It was dark for the switchbacks at the VA/NC border. Google said 10.5 hours from my house to the hotel without stopping. The next day, I left the hotel at 10:30AM, stopped for gas and lunch, made it to Ormond Beach at 5PM. If I were to do it again, I'd take the I-95 route straight down and leave earlier.
