Just saw this on First Coast News. I have been wondering what they had planned for 9A when the plans went through to connect it. It would be strange to have 1 road with 2 names depending on the section you are on.

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Once the last major construction work is finished on State Road 9A, the state plans to drop the "9A" name.

State Road 9A will become the "I-295 East Beltway" and what is now simply Interstate 295 on the Westside will become the "I-295 West Beltway."

But that is just what our city needs! More confusion and stupidity on the road ways!

I drove around Jacksonville for the first time last week, armed with my GPS.

I am now scared of driving on 9A, because the GPS took me all over the place and there were too many detours! I just don't understand what's going on over there by the SJTC right now :-)

Not to mention the new roads that aren't on the GPS, even though I've updated it fairly recently.

It'll take another couple of years for any map to catch up with JAX. They barely added the 295/9A connector.

When I first moved here, I was so confused by Hendricks Ave --> San Jose Blvd --> St Rd 13, Butler Blvd - JTB - 202. Not to mention how confused I was by Atlantic & Beach Blvd. Now it all just seems so silly that I couldn't figure it out.

Anyway here's a couple of Burma Shave ads for Jax:

Traffic in Atlanta
Is really really bad
We copied their beltway names
But that's all. Aren't you glad!
... Jacksonville

We're growing so fast
GPS can't find streets
And so many detours
One may need a Jeep
... Jacksonville

I'm on a roll today.

I kinda wish they'd name it all 9A......."nineay"......it just sort of rolls off the tongue....much easier than "eyetoonineteefayve"!

In most cities, it is shortened to "295" or simply, "the loop". It is much simpler for out of towners to have one road that goes all the way around town than to have one road on the East and one on the West that are connected, but have a different name.

The good news is, once the loop is completed and all of the signage is changed, I'd look for through trucks to be banished from 95 through town.
