This thread is very outdated since Sun Bank became Sun Trust in 1998, as far as I know. Why would anyone have an inactive account for 12 years?

Banks do not randomly freeze accounts. I mean, I've had a CD for 5 years and did nothing but check my statements. If there's suspicious activity, the account holder is contacted. By suspicious activity, I mean fraud or identity theft.

Sometimes if after 2 years you fail to do any business with that bank (I suppose some banks only wait a year or 18 months) and the account doesn't change, the bank will call or send a letter and, if you do not respond, it's possible your account will go into a dormant file. Often if a bank has taken over another bank, you are asked to complete a form to verify the accounts if you're not actively using them. I've never heard of a bank charging a penalty or fee to reactivate an account, but I suppose it's possible. It certainly wouldn't be anything close to $2,700 however.

To avoid this from happening, just make a small transaction once or twice a year. Deposit or take out $10. However, being "active" doesn't necessarily mean depositing or withdrawing money. Just calling customer service or going online to check your account or even using an ATM to check your balance shows activity.

Hope this helps.
