I have read through many posts and I am sorry if this post has already been discussed.
We moved to JAX last year and this is the first time I have ever heard the term "magnet school". I read up on it on their website and understand the general idea. We have been through many homes to purchase and they list their house as feeding into schools that are also listed as magnet schools (Mandarin High School, Loretto, etc.)
I am confused .... I know you need to apply to these magnet schools but do homes in the area also feed into them without applying? I chose the Mandarin area based on their schools but now I am concerned thinking that what I thought was a regular public school is actually a magnet school.
Can anyone help and explain this to me? I'd like to live in a section of town with good public schools (in Duval).
The Mandarin/Loretto district is a regular school district, regardless of whatever magnet elements might be present. If you live in their part of Mandarin, your child will go to those schools.
The big magnets are Stanton and Paxon (academic) and Douglas Anderson (arts). I guess they've expanded elements of the magnet program all over the district now. But local kids can still go to the local school regardless.

Why be concerned? If your designated school also happens to be a Magnet school, that is a good thing. As you can see, people list it as a selling point for their homes. If you end up buying in Mandarin, your child would not be excluded from the school for not being in the Magnet program.
Thanks for the information! I was worried that those schools were only magnet and if we bought in that area that our child would not automatically go there due to it being a magnet school.
If you're still looking at Mandarin houses, be sure to verify the actual school with the School Board. When I look up my home on the coj.net mapping service, the school listed for my house, Mandarin Middle, is not actually where my kids would go to school. Instead, they would go to Twin Lakes Academy.
Never would have thought of that - thanks for the heads up!
