Hello All...

A computer company I worked for was bought out 3 times while I was an employee, then once more after I left the job. I've gotten conflicting advice on how to list the company name/s on my resume, so I thought I'd pose it here.

Should I list the company as CurrentName (formerly Third, formerly Second, formerly First)? Since I left the company before they changed to CurrentName, I feel I shouldn't list that. Another said to just use Third, as it was called when I left... but since I was there through all the restructures, I feel it will benefit me to list all the former names... won't they see on paper that I can handle change & upheaval & it may get me an interview?

Similarly, I just discovered a business school I attended many years ago has a new name. Would it be best to use the old name or both... XYZ School (formerly ABC School)?

Thanks very much.

You don't need to list the entire history of the company. Current name (formerly first name) should be sufficient. Or you could list Most recent former name (Now current name) if you prefer. The later might help underscore the fact that you did not work for the company under its current ownership or structure.

The business school could be listed the same way: Former Name at the time you completed your studies (now new name). Although if it was very long ago and you have more recent training or education, you might consider leaving it off entirely.

Keep in mind too, most industries are pretty small. Incestuously small, in fact. Unless you've changed occupations, its likely that most employers will be familiar with the school and company history without you needing to explain it to them.

My company has changed names 4 times and I list all of the names. I use the current name (formerly known as) format. I do it to play up the point that I've survived several buyouts/mergers/takeovers.

Thanks, Bande. That's what I was thinking, too, since our buyouts all took place within 1-1/2 yrs. So many jumped ship but I stayed on & it wasn't easy with new bosses/supervisors/systems/rules/regulations/job responsibilities/desks every few months. I went through this at 2 separate jobs... I hope to never have to repeat it...

Thanks, Kodaka. I'll see if a few more reply. This is what happened with friends... everyone had a different view on how to handle it. Some said not to list so much as I can tell my story in the interview... I'm just trying to get an edge on getting interviews. Also, I'll be prepared to change my resume should one way not be working to my advantage.
