Has he applied for state/federal jobs? I was looking to relocate 1,200 miles and 5 states away to a state with a lot fewer potential jobs than Oregon (but also correspondingly fewer qualified folks already in-state). Starting in July I applied for about 12 state positions, was deemed eligible for all, referred for 7, and had panel interviews by either Skype or telephone for four of them between September and November. I got an offer three weeks ago and accepted.
The position I accepted is a bit below where I am professionally, but not so far below that the employer would be afraid to hire me for fear I'd quit after a week. It also means I'm "in" and can be working while I get licensed in-state for my preferred "level" of job, and be ready to promote within a year. I also found that positions in the least appealing locations hold promise for an out-of-stater -- locals aren't clamoring for a remote position, which leaves room for us. And taking that bad-location job can get you into the state, and into the system, so you can promote/transfer in a year or so. I didn't get into the main city, but will be in the second-choice city that will be fine, too.
There's also sublets on Craigslist. Finding a place to live in a new city seems to be the biggest hurdle due to lack of income...
True. But.....It is possible if you have a good amount of money saved up and show you can pay the rent or can even pay 3-6 months up front. If you can show a good credit history and can have someone sign for you who would be willing to cover the rent and has the means to do so if you get into a bind. Believe it or not another good thing to do is to bring a resume to a potential rental to show you have had a steady income and good work history. A private rental is easier to get this way then a property management company but sometimes both are willing to work with you. These are some of the steps we took and they did work. Sometimes it just takes time to fall into place so have the cash reserves and as little debt as possible. Good Luck..I hope things work out for you.
