How far back would you go to apply to a job. For example if you saw a position that was posted the day before or the week before would you still bother applying?
I've gotten jobs or gotten really far in the interview process for postings that were even up to 45 days old when I applied.
I don't think that a posting more than a week or so is necessarily filled already. I would definitely apply.

Don't wait for the the job to be posted. A lot of jobs are never posted, they are filled by someone they know or someone that asked for it. Find out what you want to do and go out there and ask for a job. I'm no expert but I've never gotten a job from an add, I have gotten jobs by calling around in the industry that I was interested in and also from asking people I know.
Know what you have to offer and let them hear and feel your interest on the phone.
It may be important also to check if it's really a current job. There are 3rd party companies that intercept postings and repost them to get you to use their portal. But if you go back to the hiring companies website ---always recommended---the job is no longer listed. I don't think odds are really good either way but within 2 weeks is what I pick. Older ones tend to be reposts.
Mind, this is great networking advice but just knowing what you want to do, doesn't mean anyone is hiring for it or you can even do it. You can have a brand with no market. Sure time to brush up those skils which you can only get by working in the field where you can't get hired...loop this.
I wouldn't apply for a job that I didn't hear about from someone first. If I don't know from a friend/acquiescence that the job will be posted before it actually is, my chances of getting it more often than not are going to be slim.
