My first job out of college was working for a small CPA firm. I had access to all sorts of confidential information- SSNs, bank account numbers, etc.

They didn't bother doing any kind of check on me. My references weren't checked, I wasn't asked for college transcripts, and I never was asked to consent to any kind of background check. I had an interview and the day after I got a call.. "we're offering you $xxx, when can you start?" and that was it.

My advice, and strategy, if I was in that position.. Don't lie, but don't volunteer.

Lots of places nowadays ask on a '7 year' basis. Whether you've been convicted of a felony in the past 7 years.

Other places don't ask at all. If they ask.. Be honest about it, because if they check, you will get caught.

A pardon does not mean that you can answer no to the question on the application. You were still convicted, even if you received a pardon for it. Expungement means that you can answer the question as no.

I'd just lie about it. Background checks - REAL background checks and not some BS search on some bogus database - cost money to obtain. In Maine the cost is $31. The only truly free database is the sex registry. Everything else costs money and employers aren't likely to spend $31 on each applicant. Just think how many thousands of dollars that would cost...

Absolutely do not voluntarily tell an employer youre a felon. WAL*MART might check but no small business can afford to do so.

[quote=arc212;22767434]I find it odd how people expect former convicts to stay out of crime when everyone tries like hell to keep them out of legitimate work.

It's all about a little thing called TRUST.
