If the responsibilities listed working solely with male students, then I would understand. But since this person would be working with both males and females, then I don't know why women would not be considered for this job.
Because in several Christian denominations (fundies, I'm looking at you!) including the one I was raised in and promptly left (after teaching at a school like this as well), women are expected to shut up and be seen and not heard. Hence, the reason I left. I'm not so good at shutting up.
Since it's from a religious organization, there may be a significant portion of their youth who lack a good male role model. I would consider "good male role model" to be a legitimate job qualification.
Don't mean to be un-PC, but here are too many kids running around who have no idea about what a responsible adult male should act like. Without somebody to learn from, who behaves differently, and is nevertheless self supporting, they will perpetuate what they see - to the detriment of society as a whole.
Excellent post! The one point I might add is that religious institutions are exempt from federal civil rights laws when it comes to their ministerial staffs (due to the first amendment). This exception does not apply to non-ministerial positions. How much you want to bet they will claim that this person is a minister?
If it's for a "Youth Minister", the exemption applies. And, seeking a solid male role model for a congregation that may have an underrepresentation of solid adult male role models among its middle school and high school aged kids is a legitimate job qualification. It is in middle school that most kids go on the dropout track - to their detriment for the rest of their lives.
