Will you need to actually work *at* the HQ? If not, how close is their local site to where you live? Also, a 20-30% decrease is huge. Is their max rate set in stone or is it negotiable? Is there room/opportunity for growth/moving up?

During my last job search, yes, I travelled 90miles+ for interviews (on my own dime). However, it was always after an initial phone interview, they were jobs I really wanted, salaries were in my range, and in cities I was more than willing to relocate to.

If you plan on relocating if you get the job then of course you should go for the interview but under no circumstances should you even think of asking for reimbursement for your travel expenses to get there, nor should you expect any reimbursement for moving expenses if the position is offered to you.

The perks for a head-hunted top level executive or for someone in a highly specialized field are negotiable but (please correct me if I'm wrong) I don't think you're in that position. Hope you do well in the interview - good luck!

Good advice. I qualify every prospective employer as much as possible. I had a company want me to travel to Silicon Valley on my dime. I determined the range of pay was low relative to COL asked them if they could come up. They said no I said no thanks and it saved me a lot of time and $$$.

Only if you plan on relocating. Driving nearly two hundred miles for a daily commute is absurd. If it is just to the interview and not to the job site, 184 miles isn't a huge deal.

Will you be working at HQ?

If a candidate asked me for reimbursement for an interview they drive to, I have to admit it would reflect very poorly on them.

For long distance interviews where a flight would be involved, in my field it is customary for the hiring company to pay for the flight (and sometimes hotel) up front and reimburse for reasonable meals, rental car, etc. with receipts.

Job hunting expenses are tax deductible. Record your mileage and save your receipts for meals while you travel.

Yes, I would be working at HQ. I would have to move to that city if I get the job.

I did it once. I knew that if I got hired I couldn't commute but better than nothing.

No, because that would involve me having to relocate because I would not drive 180 miles R/T regardless of the pay.

For a 90 mile drive?

I mean, I agree with you in general that reimbursement might be reasonable if you're being recruited... but for a 90 mile drive? That's just cheap. If you had to fly there or it was longer than you could reasonable drive and had to get a hotel, then I could see asking if they're trying to recruit you.

I also wouldn't bother walking a block for a 20-30% cut in pay, however. At least not if there was some other motivating factor like a completely different field that I wanted to get into.

This.

Don't ask to be reimbursed unless you don't want the job and you don;t want to be reimbursed anyway. The only time you should be reimbursed for a job interview is if the company seeks you out & asks you to come to them.
