No company has time to manually review 500 applications for one regular job. I wonder if she meant that the computer went through all of the applicants and narrowed it down for them.

Wow. I stand corrected. However, I think the government operates differently than a regular company. For government jobs, I can see this being done. For a CSR job at a call center, not so much.
Who knows. I could be wrong. We do know that companies use computer based filtering programs to sort through all of the applications.
Depending on the position and time of year I see anywhere from 25-200 applications for a position. 30-50% are qualified! the rest are simply a wast of time.

We use software to winnow the amount down via keywords then Wonderlic the highest scoring candidates, then interview from the top three scorers.
