Just wanting to know from the general public on this forum. Have you ever lied on a job application about being fired and gotten the job or have you been honest about being fired and gotten the job? On the converse have you been caught lying on an application about being fired? if so what happened?
Part of me wants to say yeah I got fired but I got a new job and it just wasn't a good environment/fit/coworkers... The other part of me and all of my peers say you never say you got fired.
2 Members of my team got moved to other teams and I was thinking to my self... Hmm I wonder whats going on...
shortly after I was sent an email "Please start working xx amount of ADDITIONAL hours a week" but then my boss gave me no work. I was soon called into HR and told that I was unfit for the new team and I have performance issues." They said that the team feels strongly that I deserve severance and that they would answer ANY/ALL questions that I had, HR and big shot who fired me said "NO HARD FEELINGS." I was escorted out of the building and not allowed to go back to my desk. They shook my hand.
I did everything my boss asked of me happily so and got compliments from here but I was a laid back kind of guy maybe that was my issue.
The only time I've ever been let go involuntarily I asked them they were unhappy with my performance and they said no. They were letting a lot of people go at the time and it was during the height of the recession (late 2009). Since I never received a reason from them and they didn't contest unemployment, on my apps I just say that it was staff reduction due to economic conditions. I wouldn't outright lie, but you can definitely say something similar - "Company restructuring". Some places do ask if you were involuntarily fired with cause though...
You don't necessarily need to divulge that you were fired. When companies check references, all that your prior company can tell them is you job position and your start/end date. Most employers realize that in this economy, people are let go for any number of reasons, and "performance issues" is a hazy area. All you have to do is find just one person in the company with lower performance than yours who is still working there, and the company has left itself open for a potential lawsuit. Most companies don't want the headaches.
