I'm employed right now, but have been attempting to relocate to the Northeast for years (I live in North Florida). I haven't sent out hundred or even dozens of resumes, but maybe once or twice a month, just to test the waters. I have received exactly one reply from an HR person since 2008. I have 20 years experience in publishing and I'm working right now as a reporter for a small community newspaper. I'm over 50 and in good health, and I'm open to new experiences. I own a house here, and would probably rent i out if I got a job up north. Any suggestions for a person who is over 50 and trying to relocate?
Seriously? Honestly? My very best advice to you is to learn to love what you have. You actually have a real JOB in journalism right now. You are lucky! Journalists are a dime a dozen sitting behind their computer screens churning out SEO crap for pennies. Thanks to the net, the glory days of the reporter are done and gone. And you want to move to the NE, a generally high cost area that would probably require you to make more money to pay even basic needs.
Add the fact you are old to all of the above and I'm seeing a recipe for disaster here!
High density cities are notorious for age bias because they're packed with Millenials. I live in NYC for 17 years, I am over 40. I've watched it go on and on. I've heard about it too plenty. I hear similar stories from Boston residents too.

Since you own down there ... and have a job, perhaps you could give us some logic of why you want to move up north?
Do you know somebody up there? Where exactly are you looking?

That was the case in my high density city several years ago, but the tide has turned and people in their 50's and even 60's are being offered good jobs. They are considered dependable, they show up without an attitude, and they're not prone to job hopping. It all depends on where you live, I guess.

I don't know what city you are in so I can't comment on that. What type of "good jobs" are being offered to 50-60 yr olds? Walmart? Home Depot? Please be specific. Call center jobs? Seriously I am kind of curious.

For every one unemployed over 50 that lands a job at this level, a hundred others either remain unemployed or try thier hand at real estate.
