Yeah, no. By giving me interview questions, wanting 5 references, and asking for the time and date of my first kiss all before you even look at my resume to see if I'm a "good fit" is wasting my time, too. Leave the interview questions for the interview, thanks.
Unfortunately you are the one looking for the opportunity, they more than likely have hundreds if not thousands of other people looking for opportunities, as someone else posted if you cannot take the time to answer the questions than you just weeded yourself out of the running for the job. I am sure they have plenty of people who will answer the questions and are willing to put up with the hoops for a job they want.

Lol

I agree- the listing of the references on the online app is pretty ridiculous.
Plenty of companies have always asked for references on your original ap, especially lower level/entry level type jobs, they have been doing that for at least the last 24 years.

If I see too many questions I abandon ship. Why spend an hour filling out one application that may be passed over when I could use that time to apply to 10 other jobs?
I don't apply for jobs for my health. I apply because I need them and while it may be annoying to fill these out, I suck it up and do it.

Even if I am the one looking for the opportunity, it is only one opportunity out of thousands. I view job hunting as a numbers game and I'd rather fill out a bunch of short applications instead of putting my eggs into one basket with one long application.

Trip McNealy also makes a good point. You shouldn't have to give references on the initial application. I used to give them out until solicitors started calling my references. It's too much of a risk to give them out before you even know who's on the other end.

If you don't really need to find a job right away, and you don't have time, I guess I can understand this.

I remember my biggest gripe when I was searching was the option to upload your resume, which I always did, and then they would make you fill out fifty fields with the same exact information. Why did I upload my resume if you're making me recreate the wheel anyway??

Trust me the HR departments and hiring managers do not need to waste time on someone who feels taking a few extra minutes applying for a job is not worth the effort.
I'm with you. The suggestions and complaints I see on this site make me wonder how some people get and keep jobs.

Yeah, that's what happens when you deal with human beings. They should be happy to do whatever our wonderful employers ask, like the robots.

There was one place I applied to who wanted to talk to my references AND my current employer before they would offer an interview. Their reasoning was that a lot of applicants lied about their background and skills. They didn't want to waste time interviewing those people. I told them I didn't want my current employer to know I was looking elsewhere. They said it wasn't negotiable. I gave up at that point and withdrew my app.

Job hunting should only be a numbers game if you are just starting out in your career, or really desperate, reality is that applying for jobs you do not actually want or that you are not qualified for is just a waste of time whether it takes 15 seconds or 15 hours. Fact is playing it at a numbers game means that you are just looking for a job until you can get another job, and if that is the case I can understand why you want to put little to no effort into finding one, but than you should understand when plenty of companies find ways to discourage people from applying that only want another job and not a career.

Also I understand that some less than scrupulous companies will use people's references as leads, but than it is usually pretty easy to avoid those types of companies, but what do I know I have only been in sales for most of the last 20 years.

Now contacting current employer I can see being a problem, I spent a long time in sales, and that phone call would cost a salesman not only his job but any commission that they have not been paid as of yet. But that is different than asking for a few friends or ex-coworkers that they may call to find out a little about you.

Especially since the secret is that most of those companies will not even contact your references and if they do they will do it after the interview.

jwiley, when I say numbers game I don't mean I apply for jobs I'm not qualified for. I simply meant I'm not focusing on one long job application when there's hundreds more I could be applying for. When I see an excessive amount of questions on an application I tend to avoid it to focus on more job-hunting.

Most of my job offers came from the traditional method of sending only my resume and then getting an interview. The few times I have filled out a long app were when I had an inside friend and knew the job was in the bag anyway. Otherwise I'm not going to waste my time.

The point still stands that no company needs my references before they even talk to me.
