Why would email being down stop somebody from applying for jobs? If you email your resume to somebody at the company, they will refer you to their company job posting site for intake. More often than not, they don't accept resumes by email. In order to apply for a specific job post, you would have to go to the company website first to see any openings.
If his website browser was broken, then he would have a huge roadblock from applying online.

Wow, shoot the messenger much? I didn't design the system. Having yahoo mail or AOL or other "nineties" email platforms is like typing your resume in Comic Sans: it doesn't affect the content, but it does affect the perception for a lot of people. When it costs you absolutely nothing to switch to a platform that is viewed as more professional, why wouldn't you?
And what platform would that be?
Second question, more professional, according to who?
gmail is more widely accepted over yahoo or aol. more professional according to those who are doing the hiring.
I gotten many interview invites using a yahoo email address. As long as you have a professional email then I don't see why the email provider is a big issue
If you go anywhere face to face they will tell you to apply online
If you email your resume to anybody, they will tell you to apply online on their website. Even if the hiring manager gets your resume, they need you to fill out the job application for the open job position. A hiring manager may have multiple positions open. It gets their resume in the system for a specific requisition number.
Most employers will call you, if you don't have an email address listed. Employers will call you, even if you have an email address listed.
I have never heard that there was a stigma attached to yahoo, I knew many looked down on hotmail, netscape, and aol, but my yahoo account never seemed to affect me.

I can see hotmail being having a stigma attached to it but not yahoo.
