someone who has a past 2 year resume gap but a focused resume for the finance industry

or someone who has no gap but spent 2 years in self-employment working on something unrelated like an internet company and possibly appear uncommitted to the industry

Neither.. there's plenty of qualified candidates in the finance industry and I'd not be desperate to hire either one of them. If I could only choose from those two, I'd lean slightly towards the 2nd one, all else being equal.
