Say you happen to be slandered on the internet but the slander/attacks on your name and reputation are coming on places such as internet forums and some blogs. Your record is clean, no arrests or anything of that nature, but say some person decides they just don't like you and drag your name through the mud on online gossip which happens to show up on google and on the first two pages as well.

A lot of what they are saying is unproven and is for the most part gossip but due to the popularity of the forum or blog, it shows up on the first couple of pages of google.

Do employers care enough about it or will they just dismiss it as nonsense?

Example, you are a woman and your name is being slandered on a forum or blog full of misogynists.

I'm a hiring manager, and we have no formal policy on checking social media for potential candidates. Still most of us will go ahead and take a look at people
online once we have made a decision to interview them. There is no documentation or discussion of what is found,if anything, and a personal dispute with someone is unlikely to influence the decision if that person is otherwise the best after the interview. Anything criminal, or having to do with drugs is another matter, and bears further verification. We all know that internet posts, especially social media are not reliable.

For the flip side, my company (one of the largest private employers in the US) does have a formal policy about checking out candidates on social media.

It is prohibited.

I think it would depend on what is being said. If people are posting that Edith sleeps around, nobody cares. If they're posting that Edith sleeps with people in upper management and is held to different standards, a hiring manager who sees that may eliminate you from being considered.

If the site uses your full, real name, can't you contact them and tell them you'll be getting an attorney for libel if it's not removed? (it's libel if written - slander if spoken)
