When Back to the Future II came out in 1989, "the future" was 2015. We're now in 2015, and even though we don't have hoverboards quite yet, we've come a long way.
In just the last 10 years, job searching has become a lot more technologically advanced. Here are a few small changes you can make to ensure these new developments work for you.

Where's the plain networking? The last few jobs I've had, I got an interview before completing the application and after the interview, HR gave me the forms to fill out. I knew the managers at those jobs from previous jobs, sent them my resume directly, and they had HR call me. Even my current govt job, while I applied online, I was vetted for by people I knew.
Networking outside of your field is fairly easy, as in go to church or somewhere where a lot of professionals gather but not for a "business" purpose. And most church people tend to think favorably about people of their own congregation. I'm not "devout" but I go for the music/songs/food and I enjoy their company and they mine, so we get along. I've heard about jobs and did temp/weekend work for people that I met at sports events because I got to talking with them and found out they were short hands for that weekend so I said I could help and I got "hired".
