People are lucky if their family is actually supportive. Often family are the very first ones to turn their backs on you when you are unemployed.

You shouldn't be telling anyone that it doesn't matter. It does.

Agreed.

I hire for entry level positions. Anything over a year or two would give me red flags. As long as you have good past work experiences and education, and have been doing something productive/interesting over the past year of unemployment, I'll give you a shot.

It would give you a red flag knowing that companies close down and layoff all the time?

Maybe you should re-read.

I was told that while it is possible to get a good job after six months of unemployment, I will be swimming upstream. After a year of unemployment I am basically dead in the water, especially since I am over 55.

Put yourself in the shoes of a hiring manager. Why would he or she want to hire someone who is not being accepted by others? If others reject you, isn't that a sign to potential employers?

Or, are you more easygoing about the desirability of someone who has been unemployed for a long time?
I think they didn't or don't have to work.

As right as this may be, it's also very wrong. You go by this, and now you'll get labeled as a job hopper.

If someone is unemployed for over two it should not raise any red flags because of the reasons below.

1. Unemployment is only 26 weeks effective 2014

2. There are lots of months that hiring is slow like July, August, September, November and December

3. Usually for someone to apply to a job someone has to be fired, promoted, or retired

So there will be unemployed over 2 years as we move forward because it's hard to find a job in 6 months.

Hello. Is anyone home? The poster that you quoted still said nothing about companies closing or layoffs. He or she said nothing of the sorts in that post.
