I'm currently employed full time with a "Consulting" job title but appear to be having a hard time with recruiter's understanding that I'm currently full time and looking for full time positions, not contract. When I mention that, they are like "but you are currently a consulting system engineer?"

Would it generally be considered a bad idea if I changed my job title on my resume to "senior" instead of "consulting"? Will that throw up red flags for possible employers? I've always been of the mind that job title doesn't matter, and as I've been applying for opportunities I've been focusing on the "senior" level positions anyways. To me, a "drop" from a consulting title to a senior title doesn't mean anything.

Could you use "full time consultant" as your title?

They usually don't even look at job titles on background checks because official titles and listed titles can differ so much.

I would put "senior" or whatever in the job title and then under your job duties or in your cover letter list that you are a consultant for XQY Company doing ____________. Technically as a consultant, you are your own boss/company so you can list whatever job title you want .

Why not just put "Systems Engineer" as the title? The bullet points for the job description on the resume can note that you oversee all "X" projects.

Sounds like NC-Guy has half the problem solved;

The other half would be speaking to recruiters who know what they are doing.

Seems that a recruiter who is having problems understanding your intent would not be someone capable of finding you an appropriate opportunity.

I think the problem is with the recruiters, not your title.
