I am in the middle of the interview process for a surprise opportunity. I wasn't actively looking, but a friend referred me to her friend who is on the hiring panel for the role. The were socializing, discussing work stuff and the topic of the job opening came up.
She reached out to me after the casual convo to see if I minded getting passed over to the recruiters. A few days later the internal recruiter contacted me for a phone interview.
I passed the phone interview and went in for an in person interview. It felt very strange. I never submitted my resume. I didn't even bring one. The interview was super casual. We discussed some mutual current / previous colleagues.
All in all the process has seemed quite strange. How do you feel in these sorts of situations?

Congrats. As the say...It's all about who you know.
I actually received my very first referral a few weeks ago from someone I met on linkedin.
Haven't been contacted yet for an interview.
But looking forward to receiving that call.
Opportunity is one in a lifetime.
I wouldn't worry too much about this particular situation.
Make sure to treat your friend to lunch. She did you a huge favor.

Girlfriend,
That's how it works. Congrats!!!
What feels strange? Do you feel that you didn't somehow earn it? I have been there and it felt surreal, like I couldn't believe that this great opportunity was happening to me.

I second the take your friend to lunch idea.
I felt very courted in this process. The questions were really like "what will it take you to leave your current job?"
But it does seem like a good opportunity hitting some of the hot buttons I put on my career vision a while ago. Unfortunately I was a little ahead of the times with that vision....I haven't really seen any places where it come to fruition yet, but the company in question is there! That is the department they are building now, so it does sound awesome!
Of course part of me would feel bad leaving my current colleagues. I am the subject matter expert, and no one really knows what I do at my current company. I'd leave a big hole. And I like the people I work with.
We'll see what comes out of it, but all signs are good!
And I definitely owe my friend lunch or something. A glowing recommendation goes a long way! Wondering what she said. LOL.
ide say half of the good.jobs i have had were obtained with no resume because I knew someone. The last shop I worked at everyone that worked there had to know someone to get in (nice union shop). the resume is really just a formality at these places if they requir them because having someone vouch for you seals the deal before they even meet you. good luck with your new job.
I have gotten many jobs via blind applying. And then found out in the interview we have mutual contacts. One from a less warm referral. Last few jobs have been via LinkedIn.
Looks like all went well! They are starting the hard press and working on an offer. Will feel bad leaving my team but it is an excellent career opportunity.

Thanks everyone! Working on the details with start date now! And need to follow up with my friend.
I didn't even have to hunt down any references. . I was getting ready to line some up!
