I was terminated from a company after being there 5 months. I had never been terminated before. It was a horrible company culture. I had a job interview last Thursday in CA. They flew me there, paid for the hotel, and had a car service for me. I thought the interview went great until I spoke with the HR person (I interviewed with 3 other people prior to HR). She asked me what happened at the previous company and I explained that it wasn't a good fit. She then asked if I left or was terminated, so I told the truth. Now I am wondering if that is going to hurt my chances. Were any of you terminated and had issues finding a job?

I was terminated from a W-2 contract position back in July 2013, employed by a staffing agency, then took another temp job fifty miles away from home and was only there about a month, then took another job in September 2013. The third employer knew the employer I was terminated from had financial problems and it wasn't an issue. I've since taken both of those short term jobs off the resume.

I was fired from my first job outside of the navy. It was my fault and I was in the wrong. I explained that situation to each and every job afterwards and never had a problem. I told the truth and how it was a learning experience for me.

I agree with you I think honesty is the best policy. When I told a friend that I was honest and told HR in the interview I was terminated he said I should have lied. Companies can check these things.

ALWAYS be prepared for the "Why did you leave the last company?" Question....

Paint it in such a manner you can say "I was terminated due to that the companies objectives were not easily targeted and there wasn't a lot of material you could nail down and say "This is what we have to do" and they'd change targets daily which led to frustration which I guess showed in my work"

Also, mention that you learned from your mistakes and that you thank your previous employer for the opportunity.

Your friend is wrong. You did the right thing by being honest. Own it, explain what you learned as a result and move forward with dignity. This will work in your favor each time, as opposed to lying.
Yes, companies can find out that you were terminated.

I agree lovely40. I have heard that companies won't hire you if you have been terminated, but I think I explained it very well to the HR person. The other 3 key interviewers didn't seem to care. I just said, "It wasn't a good fit for me" and we moved on. Hopefully the fact that I was terminated won't be a deal breaker with getting the job but since this is the first time this has happened to me I sometimes wonder.
