I am currently living across the country from where I need to get back to,I'm currently with a company that has opps to transfer to it's other locations near where I want to be anyway. It'd be 5 hours from where I'm eventually looking to be now,in the meantime if I get to the one area I could maybe look for another company that has locations closer to my goal area.

I assume most non-private companies,Walmart for example, have opps to transfer. It'd probably be more certain than another place 5 hours away guaranteeing me a job when I move there...

My brother recently did a similar transfer, he's in supermarket produce. He found that the new store will look at the recent performance reviews and either accept or reject based on that, in addition to an interview. It's not automatic by any means. Also, it took nearly a year for an opening in the area he wanted, and even then he ended up with a 35 minute commute, because the store where he wanted to live has still not had any openings.

My current company seems a little more open as far as transfers, since this industry is quite transient anyway. I'll still have to talk to HR and work it all out,but I'm hoping it won't be that difficult.
