Hypothetical situation (ok, not really)

Got a job offer, contingent upon background check. Credit check/score not good.

Got another job offer phone call (have to call them back).

How can I work this? I like the first job, but waiting on the b/g check.... could be a few more days.

Can I delay the 2nd offer? Perhaps they do not do a b/g check? Maybe they do, I do not know yet.

Job is in Finance/Accounting.

I have been on the other end of this a few times lately, it seems like the best people are getting multiple offers now with more good jobs available. When you ask for a few days to decide, the employer recognizes the delay tactic and knows that you have another offer or at least another very possible offer. Based on my experience as a hiring manager there are several possibilities:

1. They are not in a big hurry and really like you, so will accept the delay, and hope you don't get the other offer.

2. They are in a hurry and there are other good candidates so will decline, and give you a short deadline to decide, and move on if you don't accept in time.

3. They really like you, will ask if you have another offer, and if so, sweeten the deal with more money

Whatever you decide to do is a gamble, that could work out for better or worse.

Ask for an offer letter that list salary and benefits, from my experience , you usually have 1 week to decide after receiving the offer letter.

Why not just take the one you want? Are you worried about the BG check?

You have nothing until you have a formal offer letter in your hand, and you should pursue the 2nd offer until this happens.

Try to get as many offers as possible, this is a good situation to be in.

And ask them to snail mail it to you, so you have more time to make your decision.
