I've tried to use employee referrals for the first time in my career, since networking is all people talk about for finding a job.
1. How well do you need to know someone? One person I reached out to I knew through a volunteer organization we are both involved in. We both work in the same industry and have had friendly chit chat a few times and talked about work. I reached out to him and I get the feeling he didn't want to help. He took a week to respond, and then told me to just apply through the website. If he did want to help, he would have told me to use his name when applying.
2. What actually happens when you use someone's name in a referral? I did use someone's name for another position on the application, and during the phone interview, they just asked how I knew him. Do they actually ask this person questions about me, or does it simply give me a better chance for an interview? Does it give me a better chance of getting hired? I feel like the hiring manager isn't going to care once I'm sitting in front of him/her for an interview.
