Wow, this is just insulting. There is one job in my area that is advertised as Light admin office job in private school for special needs kids. Must be able to run the office and fill in for teachers as necessary. Must have child care experience. Also will work for mortgage broker making cold calls. Must have telemarketing experience. Full time. Pay is $16,000 which makes it about $7.90/hour. Same job!! Teacher of special needs, office worker and cold calling mortgage sales.
It's been going down like that for a while now. I recently saw an ad that required a Bachelors, 3+ years of administrative HR experience, 5+ of finance and tax experience and offered $9 an hour to start.
Even in my line of work where the average pay is $25 an hour, I've seen jobs offered for $13 or less. It's really sad, and this is California! One of the highest states for cost of living!

I say take it for now IF there are other benefits for the job. I had a job that paid $8.00/hr (plus great benefits) right after graduating from college. I was the assistant to the Advertising Manager (who was also the owner of the agency). The reason that made me accept the job was because of the EXTREMELY pleasant work environment. Basically, there were only 2 people working in the office (the owner and me), I had my own big glass office overlooking the city. It was located on the 11th floor of a high-rise building and the owner/manager was the coolest person I have ever met. She was rarely in the office and I was in/out of the office myself (which made me exercise and get a much needed fresh air). I love working independently, in a quiet work environment so it worked for me. Even though I was underpaid, I felt rich at the same time since I could not wait to wake up every morning to go to work!!!! How I long for that kind of work environment now but it does not exist anymore. The only reason I left was because the owner(my boss) decided to move her business to NYC and I could not move there due to the high standard of living.
I hate working in a cluttered cubicle environment because nowadays unless one is a manager/supervisor, they do not give you an office. You would be sitting in an open office, with many people sitting next/around you and irritating you since you'll have to listen to their conversations. You will have no privacy or comfort since everyone is hovering behind you. So I say if there are other pluses about the job, consider taking it. For me, work environment is pretty BIG. Different strokes, for different folks, you know...
As long as people are taking it, it's just going to get worse, because companies are going to see that people are willing to take these and lower the bar every time.

This is becoming highly prevalent in job postings on CL, Careerbuilder, Monster, et al. The employers can really ask for the world and pay the lowest wage possible and actually get a fairly productive worker. I guess the biggest issue with real wages falling is that real prices are rising which makes it painful on all.
Don't forget - craisglist is freebie listings, so primarily many who offer jobs on there either can't afford to put it on something like Monster, or don't want to spend the bucks to do so. RED FLAG right there.
I'm also finding great jobs out there that are manager level and above, lots of responsibility and expectations, only to read the fine print to see it's for a STUDENT INTERN ! Employers have found ways to cut corners all the way around. Great - you've got a student intern who has something sweet to put on their resume, and who's obviously helped out in a key area during a crunch for little or no pay. The area's work has been caught up, the kid goes back to school, and the job itself dissolves....until next summer.
Sound like the pay in Vermont. I swear these people are 20 years behind the times...(and it costs a lot to live here...).
