I am sharing as maybe this will cheer someone up. A real life recruiter called me for a job today. She found my resume on Jobing.com (local job board). So, maybe things will pick up.
I am not interested in the job, which is too bad, but it IS a good sign. So take heart fellow job seekers!
It is a good sign! I have an interview on Wednesday. Just got a call today for a position I applied for directly on the company website on 10/31. And this is a job I am interested in, qualified to do, no travel, easy drive, ya di ya di ya. Even if I don't get this job, I consider this a good sign.
I think you may be right movin'on. I too have begun to receive unsolicited calls/emails. Unfortunately, most require relocation which is not in the cards. It is still, however, a very tight market for the foreseeable future.
I have heard from several recruiters calling me and also contacting me via LinkedIn. Things are picking up. I'm happy where I'm at here in Michigan but I always keep my options open for other opportunities.
Just to give a positive outlook on the hiring market... As a recruiter, 2009 was tough! to say the least.. companies were not hiring, freezing hiring.
For our company Oct 2009 was our best month in 2009! Clients are reaching out to us to help find candidates. They have been running under-staffed for 2009 and are currently hiring for 2010. Employers have seen the toll it's taking on their staff being overworked and are planning to resolve this in 2010 by hiring.
Speaking solely of the financial industry in NYC, I think the job market is definitely starting to pick-up. Over the last month or so, I have received a number of calls/emails from recruiters with pretty good positions they were looking to fill. Although I am not in the market, I was able to pass them along to some colleagues who were. Earlier in the year and during the summer, it was pretty quiet and whatever calls I did get were mainly 3-6 month contract positions. Now, they are calling about permanant positions with good salaries.
From what I've been seeing, many financial firms laid off too many people and now need to staff up again as business is building up and they do not have the resources to handle it.
This last June I was laid off and signed up with more than half a dozen agencies but nothing ever happened. Then in September I got a call from an independent recruiter who found my resume on Monster and I was just what her client was looking for. After meeting with four people in one morning, I got an offer and started my new job on September 28th. The point I am making is that you just never know where an opportunity will come from so (to use a familiar cliche), leave no stone unturned.
